It puts into light the pipes, the dump trucks, and the machines that uphold this system by hiding the dirty-work from view. It points to our zombie-like, global worship of consumerism and depicts so clearly the problems it causes. What The Lorax does is it invites us to ask these essential questions. What about the gallons of water we use to shower, flush, brush our teeth, and clean the dishes with every day? And how about that paycheck? Where did the money come from? And for that matter, what is money? We are so caught up playing the game of civilization that we forget to even question its rules, its virtue, and the authority of the people who made it. When is the last time you or I asked where our food came from, or where it goes when we throw it out. Everything looks so clean on the outside.
We buy our food at the store, we fill our tanks at the gas station, and we drive home from work and receive our paychecks.
Consuming has become us, the way we think, see, and do, so we love it without question. Seuss points out in The Lorax, is our blind belief in this system of buying, selling, and consuming. And while this is all good, the way we’ve gone about doing it has created a dangerous gap between ourselves and nature, between our actions and their consequences, creating the world of ignorant destruction which we are just now beginning to see. We don’t just want to live, we want to understand, to progress, to know. The squirrel collects acorns, the brown bear fishes for salmon, but the human goes to ShopRite or Whole Foods. Let’s face it, says The Lorax, we’re the only species on earth, excluding the animals we’ve adopted into our homes and zoos, that doesn’t trust nature to provide. So what does it do? It casts a spotlight on something we have historically placed in the dark: the ramifications of our out-of-touch, consumerist lifestyle that is fueled by our “need” for Thneeds. Clothed as a colorful picture-book, it’s just as much an insightful commentary on our times, as true today as it was many years ago. So Ted tries to find another way.The Lorax is one of the most powerful books I’ve come across so far in my life. But when Ted tries to go out, O'Hare who knows what Ted is doing-trying to find a tree, tells him to stop it cause it could ruin O'Hare's business. He then stops talking and tells Ted to come back tomorrow. So he chops a tree down but then a creature who calls himself The Lorax who says he speaks for the trees and all the creature s in the forest, and he says that what he is doing-chopping down a tree is wrong. And when he comes across a forest with trees with the most beautiful leaves, he thinks this is it. So he set out to find the material he needs to make it. He asks The Once-ler what happened to the trees, he tells Ted that it began when he wanted to create something he called Thneed. So he talks to his mother and grand mother about it and his grandmother tells him to seek out someone called The Once-ler, which he does. And thinking that if he can find it will win her affections. Ted, a young man who likes a girl named Audrey who wants to see a real tree. And the air is provided by the O'Hare Corporation for a price. In the town of Thneedville, a walled city, everything is artificial even the trees.
